Former West Ham United midfielder, Nigel Reo-Coker, has pointed out what he believes was a key error made by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca during the ongoing Premier League title chase.
Maresca, who took over managerial duties at Chelsea at the start of the 2024–25 campaign, had a slow start with the squad.
However, the team began to find rhythm as the season moved forward.
Between October 27 and December 22, Chelsea went on an impressive unbeaten run, going nine matches without a loss.
During this successful spell, Maresca was asked whether his side was in contention for the Premier League title. He dismissed the idea, stating that Chelsea was not in a position to rival top clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, or Manchester City.
“Whether you are a manager or not, you have always got to show ambition, so the biggest mistake he made was when they were on that great run and he tried to say they were not in the title race. From then on, it has started to slowly go wrong for them,” Reo-Coker told BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘Football Daily’ podcast.
“It’s not good for Maresca and it’s almost like he’s talking himself out of Stamford Bridge because of the response he is getting from fans.
“You have to be ambitious when you have spent that much, when you have those young players and when you are managing Chelsea.
“That club is built around winning because of the success they have had in recent history. You are expected to finish in the top four.”
At present, Chelsea are battling for a place in the Premier League’s top four.
They currently sit in 6th place, behind Manchester City, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, and Liverpool.
