Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford following Aston Villa’s thrilling Champions League quarter-final second-leg victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Rooney commended the England forward’s standout performance at Villa Park against the French giants.

He also encouraged Rashford to bring the same level of performance back to Manchester United once he returns to Old Trafford at the conclusion of his loan spell.

Rashford, currently playing for Aston Villa on loan from Man United, played a key role as Unai Emery’s team overturned a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 win on the night.

Despite the impressive comeback, Aston Villa were unable to progress to the semi-finals, having lost the first leg 3-1 in Paris.

PSG advanced to the last four with a 5-4 win on aggregate and will meet either Arsenal or Real Madrid in the semi-final round.

“They were on the front foot, PSG were rocked, they were rattled, and Villa were going for them,” Rooney said on Amazon Prime’s coverage.

“I have to say, I have to give a massive shout out to Marcus Rashford. I thought he was fantastic, the Rashford we have seen over the years.”

“His skill, his ability, getting at players, driving at players, and then his awareness to pull the ball back.”

“When this goal goes in, you can feel the atmosphere and the Villa players get that belief that they can get back in the tie.”

He added, “I hope he goes back to Manchester United and performs like he did today.”
