Bichi Local Government Area in Kano State has officially prohibited agricultural activities within designated grazing areas and cattle paths to prevent ongoing disputes between farmers and herders.
Acting Chairman of the council, Alhaji Abubakar Sule Babangida Ɗanzabuwa, announced the decision on Tuesday, highlighting that the administration is committed to preventing any casualties resulting from such conflicts during the rainy season.
This announcement was made in a statement released by the council’s Information Officer, Tasiʼu Jibo Dawanau, who noted that the persistent clashes are both troubling and avoidable.
Representing the acting chairman, the council’s Supervisory Councilor for Land and Survey, Samaʼila Abdu Dutsen Ɗorawa, explained that the decision aims to promote peaceful relations among the various communities across the area’s eleven wards.
He further stated that the local government would enforce penalties against violators and encouraged community leaders to comply with the new regulations.
A farmer, Malam Sunusi Alhaji Adamu Damargu, recommended that authorities adopt forward-thinking strategies to reduce tensions between herders and farmers, which would in turn support the area’s socioeconomic development.
He also appealed to farmers to avoid cultivating land within grazing zones and cattle routes, while urging herders to refrain from entering farms or farmland areas, in order to help prevent conflicts.
Damargu reiterated the importance of authorities taking proactive steps to curb the recurring disputes between both groups.
