The Benue State Government has reiterated its dedication to deepening its partnership with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in the ongoing effort to combat corruption.
This assurance was given over the weekend by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Denen Aondoakaa, during a courtesy call by Mr. M.A. Wala, the ICPC Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Benue State, at an event in Makurdi.
Mr. Aondoakaa noted that Governor Hyacinth Alia had instructed all public officials and civil servants to uphold transparency and accountability in the management of government resources.
He pointed to visible progress under the current administration, including active infrastructure development, regular payment of workers’ salaries and pensions, and other key interventions, which have positioned Benue as a center of development activity.
Aondoakaa further expressed the willingness of the Bureau to work closely with the ICPC, in line with the Commissioner’s request, particularly to enhance institutional frameworks within local governments and help insulate them from corrupt influences.
He stressed the importance of public enlightenment and ethical campaigns to discourage citizens from placing unreasonable financial expectations on public servants a behavior that, he warned, often leads to corruption.
In his remarks, Mr. Aondoakaa commended the ICPC team for the visit and restated the Bureau’s commitment to supporting anti-corruption programs, especially those targeted at rural communities.
Earlier in the meeting, Mr. Wala explained that the visit was part of the ICPC’s drive to build alliances with state institutions in order to extend its advocacy to the grassroots. He noted that the Commission’s strategy goes beyond enforcement actions and includes preventive measures such as institutional assessments and civic education.
