Govt denies banning Islamic scholars, clerics from preaching

The Niger State Bureau for Religious Affairs has addressed claims suggesting it prohibited Islamic preachers from delivering sermons within the state.

In a statement issued by its Media Aide, Amb. Haruna Mustapha (Dago), the Bureau clarified that it is instead launching a new initiative involving a Da’awah Registration Form and Certification, designed to foster unity and religious understanding.

“This information is incorrect and amounts to misinformation. The Agency does not have the authority to arbitrarily ban Islamic scholars or clerics unless there is a clear violation of established guidelines, ” Mustapha noted.

He explained that before receiving certification, clerics and scholars will be required to fill out the form and go through a basic assessment process.

According to the Bureau, the registration exercise will run from September 4 to September 30, 2025. The purpose is to ensure religious messages support peaceful coexistence and mutual tolerance.

“For clarity, the meeting held on 4th September 2025 by the Peace and Conflict Management Committee, under the leadership of the Director General, was convened to introduce the Da’awah Registration Form and Certification Process.

“This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to prevent misunderstandings and curb the spread of misleading preaching across the state,” he added.

The statement also pointed out that the Committee is responsible for issuing official guidelines to all registrants. Any breach of these rules could result in the revocation of the certification issued.
