The Zamfara State Government has refuted recent allegations of negligence directed at Governor Dauda Lawal by a faction claiming to operate as a parallel State Assembly. The government dismissed the accusations as politically driven and without any legal foundation.
Responding to the claims, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Broadcast Media and Public Relations, explained that the individuals behind the accusations lack any lawful authority, citing a court injunction that prohibits them from acting in any legislative role.
Kaura referenced a ruling delivered on June 23, 2025, by Justice Muhammad Gusau of the Zamfara State High Court, which barred Bashar Aliyu and eight others from assuming the roles of Speaker and members of the State House of Assembly.
“The accusers lack legal standing and [have] already been barred from acting as lawmakers by a court order,” Kaura said.
While acknowledging that citizens have the right to voice concerns about governance, Kaura maintained that the assertions made by the group are without merit and should not be taken seriously.
The faction had accused Governor Lawal of failing to address the aftermath of recent violent attacks in Jangebe and Damri, located in Talata Mafara and Bakura LGAs. In response, Kaura rejected the claims, asserting that the administration acted promptly and compassionately.
He explained that the government had shown solidarity with the victims, noting that the Chairman of Talata Mafara LGA was instructed to end his activities in Sokoto and return to Jangebe immediately to attend funeral services for the deceased.
“The government expressed deep sympathy to the victims. In fact, the Chairman of Talata Mafara LGA was directed to cut short his engagements in Sokoto and immediately return to Jangebe to attend the funeral prayers of those killed. That shows genuine concern. What else do they expect?” Kaura asked.
Speaking on relief efforts, Kaura highlighted that an emergency response team led by Deputy Governor Mani Malam Mummuni has been actively visiting impacted areas, assessing the level of destruction, and providing essential supplies.
In terms of security, Kaura reaffirmed the Governor’s unwavering policy of not negotiating with armed groups.
“There is no compromise or dialogue with terrorists in Zamfara,” he said, adding that “the government is winning the war against banditry.”
He credited recent progress to ongoing military operations, bolstered by local vigilante groups, civilian task forces, and support from the Maiduguri-based hunters team, which have led to the elimination of several high-profile criminal leaders.
Kaura concluded by emphasizing that security enhancement remains a central focus of Governor Lawal’s “Rescue Mission Agenda.”
“Anyone saying otherwise is either politically motivated or deliberately mischievous. Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration has recorded significant success in decimating bandit groups, and the people of Zamfara are witnessing these gains,” he said.
He urged the public to disregard the allegations from the so-called lawmakers, branding them as “disgruntled political elements” and warning that their continued actions could amount to contempt of court.
“The High Court ruling is clear. Any attempt by these individuals to parade themselves as a parallel Assembly is a direct affront to the judiciary, and the court may take legal action accordingly,” Kaura warned.
