A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has remanded twelve defendants who are connected to the murder of police inspector Christiana Erekere at the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility.
Thirteen counts, including murder and conspiracy to murder, are on which the suspects are now facing a trial.
On April 25, 2024, while performing stop-and-check duties at a police checkpoint in Taaba community, Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State, Inspector Erekere was killed by people who were en route to Akwa-Ibom State for a wedding.
According to reports, the incident started when a police team questioned the authenticity of the paperwork from one of the cars the suspects were driving, which sparked a mob action that killed the woman.
The groom, Efeoghene Uwheraka, Joy Uwhereka, Shirley Wealth, Napoleon Uwhereka, Ejiro Ejogbamu, Moses Agege, and Precious Iyota are among the suspects.
The others are Emeka Joshua, Blessing Ovie, Ighofose Oke, Kikelomo Odusanya, and Wealth Ojoh.
To the charges stated against them, the 12 accused entered a not guilty plea.
Judge Augusta Chukwu, the trial judge, denied the bail requests made by the lawyers for the defendants and postponed the case until October 8 in order to hold an expedited hearing.
