The Ika Community Development Association Worldwide (ICDA), in partnership with several civil society groups, has raised concerns about what it described as unlawful and unregulated coal mining activities taking place in the Ika community of Ankpa Local Government Area in Kogi State.
Abuh Shehu, the association’s Secretary General, disclosed that both individuals and corporate entities are putting unwarranted pressure on the community to endorse a questionable Community Development Agreement (CDA).
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Monday, Shehu emphasized that the proposed agreement lacked transparency and failed to reflect the collective interests of the Ika people.
He issued a warning to the community, urging them not to enter into any form of agreement with a Chinese national, Ms. Julie Zhuo, or her company, Afrasia Mineral Limited.
He criticized the move as a violation of ministerial instructions and a direct assault on the community’s rights.
According to Shehu, the Minister of Solid Minerals had earlier directed that all CDA-related discussions and agreements must take place exclusively between the Ika community and Orbit Exploration and Natural Products Limited, which legally holds the mining title.
He further accused Afrasia Mineral Limited of using improper channels to push its interests, thereby sidestepping established procedures.
While confirming the community’s willingness to work with Orbit Exploration in a transparent and lawful manner, ICDA stressed that Ika remains a peaceful community that respects the rule of law.
However, the association also made it clear that any attempts to force illegal activities on its people would be firmly resisted, including through legal avenues if necessary.
ICDA and its partner organisations have called for the intervention of relevant authorities, particularly the Ministry of Solid Minerals, to safeguard the rights of the Ika people.
They also urged both domestic and international bodies to closely monitor the situation and stand in solidarity with the community in its fight against exploitation and illicit mining practices.
