The Ebonyi State Government has launched an investigation into the recent collapse of a mining pit in Ihietutu, located in Ishiagu, within Ivo Local Government Area.

Mr. Chidi Onyia, the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals, made this known during a visit to the site, accompanied by federal mining officials and security personnel, as part of a fact-finding mission.

The incident, which occurred last Friday, led to the deaths of two individuals and left three others injured.

Although some reports have pointed to possible negligence by the operating firm, Greenfield Metals Ltd., Onyia explained that early assessments indicate the incident may have been caused by natural factors.

“Mining, like many industries worldwide, comes with hazards.

“From our preliminary findings, this was a natural occurrence and not a result of negligence.

“Investigation is ongoing by all regulatory bodies, including the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, Police, Department of State Services, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to ensure transparency.

“If we find recklessness, we will act accordingly. But if it is a natural disaster, we must accept it as such,” Onyia said.

He expressed condolences to the affected families and dismissed claims that illegal miners had been operating at the site.

Onyia also called on the public to avoid spreading misinformation, stressing that the state upholds legal mining activities and adheres strictly to licenses granted by the Federal Government.

Meanwhile, Prince Fabian Chukwu, a community leader and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Ihietutu Development Union, acknowledged that the company had made positive contributions by empowering many residents in the area.

“They built the road to this site and never delayed in giving the community its due entitlements.

“That is why we stand by them in this unfortunate incident.”

The company has since suspended operations at the site pending the outcome of investigations.
