The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has warned that Harvard University could lose its ability to admit international students unless it complies with the Trump administration’s demand to provide information on certain visa holders.
This action marks the latest step in the government’s increasing pressure on the prestigious institution.
In a statement released on Wednesday, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also revealed the cancellation of two DHS grants totaling over $2.7 million to Harvard.
Noem explained that she had sent a letter to the university requesting records on what she referred to as the illegal and violent actions of Harvard’s foreign student visa holders by April 30.
“And if Harvard cannot verify it is in full compliance with its reporting requirements, the university will lose the privilege of enrolling foreign students,” Noem said.
A Harvard spokesperson confirmed that the university had received Noem’s letter regarding the grant cancellations and the scrutiny of foreign student visas. The spokesperson emphasized that Harvard would not compromise its autonomy or constitutional rights, while also affirming its commitment to abiding by the law.
This latest development follows a series of threats from the Trump administration to cut federal funding to universities, particularly those where pro-Palestinian protests have taken place in response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza after the deadly October 2023 Hamas attack.
Trump has portrayed these protests as a threat to U.S. foreign policy, accusing the protesters of being antisemitic and sympathetic to Hamas. Protesters, including some Jewish groups, have argued that the administration wrongly conflates their support for Palestinian rights and criticism of Israel with extremism and antisemitism.
Additionally, the Trump administration has been working to deport some foreign protesters and has revoked hundreds of visas across the country.
