Speaking publicly about the horrific event is 22-year-old Iyanuoluwa Adedeji, who is suspected of fatally stabbing her husband, Jimoh Azeez, on December 31, 2024.

She maintains that her husband’s death was not deliberate and that she was subjected to frequent physical violence during her marriage. She is currently being held by the police.

Iyanuoluwa claims that Azeez’s accusation of adultery sparked the deadly altercation. He allegedly pulled up a knife in rage as the altercation got heated.

She said that during the ensuing scuffle, the knife unintentionally hurt him. She insists that although the damage was minor, her husband thought he was at risk because of a charm he had worn.

Iyanuoluwa claimed that after realizing how serious the situation was, she hurried Azeez to two separate hospitals in an effort to save his life. Sadly, at the second facility, he was declared deceased.

Iyanuoluwa willingly handed herself in to the police after the unfortunate incident. Since then, authorities have taken her into custody and are still looking into it.

According to the police, after their investigation is finished, she will be formally charged in court.

In Nigeria, the case has spurred discussions on self-defense and domestic abuse. While some contend that Iyanuoluwa should be held responsible for her husband’s death, others think her story implies she acted in self-defense.

Many will be keenly monitoring the court proceedings to observe how the justice system responds to the allegations of self-defense and domestic violence.
