He Was Accused of Terror Links, But the Final Outcome Took an Unexpected Turn

The Department of State Services, DSS, has released a farmer, Nura Idris, after an internal investigation reportedly established that he had no connection with the Boko Haram insurgent group.

According to Daily Nigerian, the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, approved Idris’ release and also authorised the payment of N3 million to assist him in rebuilding his livelihood and restoring his business activities.

Idris, a farmer and livestock rearer from Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was arrested in Suleja, Niger State, in 2024 following allegations linking him to terrorist activities before he was later transferred to the custody of the DSS.

A special review panel constituted by the agency reportedly found no evidence tying him to insurgent operations, prompting an immediate directive for his freedom.

Speaking after his release, Idris expressed appreciation to the DSS leadership, commending the manner in which he was treated during his detention.

He stated that the financial support provided would enable him to begin rebuilding his life and resume his economic activities.

Security sources disclosed that the DSS has commenced a review of several long-standing detention cases in an effort to ensure that individuals who have been wrongfully held are not kept in custody unnecessarily.

Reports further indicated that more than 30 individuals whose cases underwent review have collectively received over N300 million in compensation.

The DSS reportedly described the exercise as part of its commitment to balancing national security responsibilities with the protection of citizens’ rights.
