Barcelona midfielder Pedri has admitted he was taken by surprise when Lionel Messi departed the club.
Messi, who rose through the youth ranks at the Catalan club, established himself as a legend in Barcelona, dominating both Spanish and global football.
Despite his iconic status, Messi left in 2021 after the club was unable to renew his contract, making the move as a free agent.
Pedri, who arrived at Barcelona from Las Palmas in the summer of 2019, spent two seasons playing alongside the Argentine star, featuring together in 47 matches.
In an interview with France Football, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Pedri recalled always relying on Messi during games.
“I always passed the ball to Messi. Clearly, he was better than me.
“It was a shock when Leo Messi left. I was playing in the Olympics, and I found it hard to believe.”
After his departure, Messi signed with Paris Saint-Germain, where he won two Ligue 1 titles. In 2023, he joined Inter Miami on a free transfer following the end of his PSG contract.
