Adamu Mohammed, an 18-year-old herdsman, was given the death penalty by a Maiduguri High Court for killing Adamu Ali, a 19-year-old herder, after a quarrel in Auno, Konduga local government area, Borno State.
According to Justice Mohammed Maina, the prosecution has established beyond a reasonable doubt that on January 19, 2025, during a fight in the jungle, Mohammed struck Ali in the head with a cutlass.
Later, Ali passed away in Maiduguri’s Borno State Specialist Hospital.
Mohammed originally entered a guilty plea, but the court recorded a not-guilty plea because the case carries the death penalty, according to court records.
In addition to presenting exhibits, which included the defendant’s remarks and a medical report, the prosecution called two witnesses. Mohammed acknowledged using a cutlass to fight the deceased in both accounts.
The court dismissed the defense’s argument that he acted in self-defense, citing contradictions in his testimony and the absence of proof that he was unable to flee or escape the lethal blow.
According to Justice Maina, Mohammed’s acts met the criteria for culpable homicide, which carries a death sentence under Section 191(a) of the Borno State Penal Code Law, 2023, because the force employed was disproportionate and unreasonable.
After that, he was given a hanging death sentence.
