A West Sussex couple has praised a charity for helping their adopted daughter overcome developmental delays and anxiety through a bespoke sound therapy program. Luke, 40, and Alex, 42, approached Bibic, a charity supporting children with neurological and developmental difficulties, in November 2022, when they noticed their eight-year-old daughter Octavia was struggling.

“We didn’t know whether her behavior was trauma-, birth- or neuro-related,” Luke said. “But Bibic instantly got it and created a sound therapy program that has changed everything for our daughter.” The program, called Johansen Individualised Auditory Stimulation, involves bespoke music designed to help children process speech and sounds.

According to Luke, Octavia had been living in “fight or flight” mode due to early trauma, but 10 months after starting the treatment, she was no longer in a constant state of hypervigilance and anxiety. “She went from being unable to fit into a school environment to going into Year 2 like nothing had happened,” he said.

The couple appreciated the charity’s staff, who were “very available from our first phone call” and spent two whole days with them during the assessment. “They gave us all the information we and her school needed without Octavia being labeled or put on medication,” Luke said.

Bibic has launched a campaign to raise £25,000 in a month to fill a funding gap, following unsuccessful grant applications. “We receive no government or statutory funding at all, so everything we need to run the charity we have to find ourselves,” said Gemma Pack, senior fundraising officer. The charity’s waiting list had soared to 68 weeks after the pandemic but has since reduced to 10 weeks after expanding their team. However, the funding shortfall threatens to increase the waiting list again.

“We just can’t get our heads around the difference it has made to us as a family,” Luke said, expressing his gratitude for the charity’s support
