Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) in Geneva, New York, has announced a historic $70 million gift from the late trustee chair emeritus L. Thomas Melly (’52; LHD, ’02) and his widow, Judith Hershey Melly (LHD ’16). This transformative donation will support academic innovation, expand student access and affordability, and drive strategic initiatives.

The largest gift in HWS history is part of the colleges’ current capital campaign. It will establish an endowed fund to provide need-based financial aid to students, funding up to 100 scholarships of $10,000 annually. The gift will also provide unrestricted support to create the Melly Strategic Innovation Fund, enabling HWS leadership to address campus needs. Furthermore, it will enhance the academic program of HWS, including developing faculty in key programmatic areas and funding strategic initiatives that will differentiate the colleges.

HWS President Mark D. Gearan expressed his gratitude for the Mellys’ generosity. “I look forward to working with faculty and staff colleagues to bring the Mellys’ vision to life as we carefully steward this extraordinary investment in Hobart and William Smith,” Gearan said.

Gearan emphasized the significance of the gift, stating, “This gift is without precedent in our history and comes at a pivotal moment in higher education. It underscores the enduring impact of Tom and Judy’s vision and generosity, paving the way for a vibrant future for HWS. Their legacy will be felt for generations, inspiring students and the broader community to dream bigger, achieve more, and make meaningful contributions to the world.”

The gift honors the legacy of Tom Melly, who graduated from Hobart with a degree in economics in 1952. Melly passed away in late December, after he and his wife had agreed to the gift. He was a dedicated trustee and leader, serving as chair for a decade and supporting numerous philanthropic efforts, including the establishment of the Melly Academic Center.
