The Governance Advisory Committee (GAC), the highest political body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, has been formally briefed by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on the recent leadership transition in the House.
The conference was held at Lagos House, Marina, and was attended by MPs, important party leaders, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Under the direction of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on Monday, a number of members discussed their experiences throughout the session.
In example, one lawmaker described a particularly distressing experience that demonstrated the severe personal toll that Obasa’s alleged mistreatment had on him.
The legislator revealed to The SunNewspaper that he had almost committed suicide as a result of the treatment he faced after running against Obasa for the Speaker’s office.
The lawmaker explained, “For daring to contest the seat of Speaker against Obasa after the election, I nearly committed suicide due to the way I was treated. None of my colleagues in the House dared to communicate or relate with me during Obasa’s reign nobody dared to greet me nor respond to my greeting. I was ostracized. If not for the people I am representing, I would have run away from the House.”
This testimony sheds insight on the personal hardships that some lawmakers endured during Obasa’s term and emphasises the stressful and frequently hostile environment that existed under his leadership. The disclosures also shed light on the severe rifts that existed inside the House and ultimately resulted in the former Speaker’s impeachment.
