A suspected burglar was electrocuted during an attempt to steal electrical lines from a vital power station in a housing development in Lagos State, resulting in a fiery catastrophe.

Two burglars, Sadiq Danjuma and his accomplice, simply known as “Yahoo,” broke into the Lateef Kayode Jakande (LKJ) Gardens in Igando early on Monday morning. They did this by scaling the fence along the LASU-Iba Expressway at around 2:00 a.m.

The two started slicing through the high-voltage wires, aiming for subterranean power cables. However, as Danjuma reached the estate’s Injection Sub-Station (ISS), the theft took a tragic turn.

A terrible electrical charge struck him, leaving his body charred and covered in burns.

His accomplice fled the site right away and disappeared into the night.

Danjuma begged with security personnel, including members of the Mountain Troops and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), saying that if he could only get medical assistance, he would disclose everything.

In between sobs, he disclosed that a cable theft syndicate had planned the entire operation.

“I came from Igando, Yahoo came from Oko Filling,” Danjuma confessed, adding: “Our boss gave me N5,000 upfront for this job and promised the balance after we delivered.”

Additionally, he acknowledged that it wasn’t their first time at the LKJ facilities.

They allegedly sold stolen cables to Akanji, a junk trader, for N10,000 per kilogram during an earlier operation. The loot was intended for a dealer named Seriki this time.

Residents of LKJ Gardens were incensed at what they perceived as the Lagos State Command of the NSCDC’s slack response, and controversy broke out within the community.

Olajide Andu, the chairman of the estate, chastised the agency for not turning over the injured suspect quickly, claiming that the authorities appeared more focused on his care than on bringing about prompt justice.

Andu said: “After treating him, we took him from Igando to corps State Command at Alausa, but we were surprised by their action. We were told to take him to hospital to get a medical report. This infuriated many residents, who lamented that it should be the duty of the NSCDC.

“We have arrested a cable thief and treated him as demanded. We were surprised the State Command of the NSCDC is asking us to take back to hospital again for a medical report around 5pm.

“Our men moved from there to a clinic inside the Alausa secretariat, but we were referred to General Hospital, Igando and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

“As of 8pm, we are still with the suspect driving back to Igando from Alausa. What if his gang members had regrouped and attacked us on the way? We are highly disappointed in the manner the NSCDC went about their duty.

“Their action didn’t encourage victims of these evil guys to want to hand over whoever arrested to them. It seems they are encouraging jungle justice with their behaviour.”

Residents of LKJ demanded that the NSCDC’s national body look into the Lagos State Command’s activities.
