Nigerian rapper and singer Eedris Abdulkareem has clarified that his latest track, Tell Your Papa, was not meant as a personal attack on Seyi Tinubu.

According to Abdulkareem, the song was a response to a statement made by the president’s son, in which he described his father, Bola Tinubu, as the greatest president Nigeria has ever had.

The artist shared his perspective during an appearance on Rubbin’ Minds, a talk show aired on Channels Television on Sunday.

Seyi Tinubu reportedly made the remark while speaking in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, in March 2025.

Abdulkareem explained that the intention behind Tell Your Papa was not to criticize Seyi personally, but to urge him to encourage his father to take action on the country’s economic struggles and rising insecurity.

“Nigerian youths are just asking for basics: electricity, security, enabling economic environment, job creation and not palliatives.

“So, why should I attack Seyi Tinubu personally? If Seyi Tinubu never talked about it, I wouldn’t have recorded a song like that. So, I am replying to the video that he made. If he had kept quiet, I wouldn’t have said anything. I am inspired by Seyi Tinubu to record that song,” he said.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) quickly labeled Eedris Abdulkareem’s latest track as unsuitable and prohibited its airplay on both radio and television platforms.

This decision has drawn widespread criticism from Nigerians, including Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, who condemned the action.

Soyinka described the move as a revival of censorship and a direct threat to freedom of expression.

Speaking during the televised interview, Abdulkareem expressed disappointment that 24 years after releasing his earlier song Nigeria Jagajaga, its message still holds true, pointing out that the country has yet to achieve meaningful progress.
