Our marriage has lasted for three years. My wife is lovely, considerate, and affectionate. However, something always obstructed it whenever I attempted to take specific business actions or make significant financial moves.

I fasted, prayed at midnight, and even planted seeds. Nothing was successful.

We went to my wife’s hometown for her cousin’s wedding last weekend. Her mother welcomed us graciously, but something about her vibe made me uncomfortable.

I couldn’t find my wristwatch on day two. I looked everywhere. Desperate, I went into her mother’s room after she had left. I was deeply shaken by what I witnessed.

Three red candles, dried lizard skin, and my wife’s waist beads—the very ones she claimed to have lost two years ago—were in a calabash beneath her bed.

My chest constricted. I snapped a picture and slipped out of the room.

I had a private confrontation with my wife that evening. She initially disputed it. Later, though, she broke down in tears and admitted that her mother had persuaded her to bind me spiritually so that I wouldn’t “leave her when I became rich.”

I’m not sure which hurts more, the betrayal or the fact that someone I care about felt the need to keep me in a spiritual cage.

I’m afraid. I feel like I’ve been taken advantage of. Was this love ever genuine?
