Nigerian artist Reekado Banks has acknowledged that his departure from Mavin Records, the label that brought him into the limelight, happened too soon.

The singer gained national attention after signing with Mavin Records, going on to win Rookie of the Year at The Headies in 2014, and clinching the highly debated Next Rated award in 2015.

In 2018, he parted ways with the label and went on to establish his own brand, Banks Music.

During a recent conversation with reality TV star Teddy A on Echoo Room, Reekado shared that he only realized he left Mavin too early after he began navigating the complexities of the music industry on his own.

He made it clear that his decision to leave wasn’t due to any conflict, explaining that his contract had expired two years prior and he simply chose not to renew it when the time came.

“It [my exit from Mavin Records] wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and pretty fixated on what I wanted to do -I wanted to leave. Anyways, my contract has ended two years prior. I signed a three-year contract and I allowed it to ride for another two years. So, I was there for five years without reviewing the contract.

“So, when it was time, I thought I wanted to do this [leave] now. I thought I could do it now. I just embarked on the journey, as many people would view it, prematurely. As soon as I jumped into the sea as well, I realised how premature it was,” he said.
