Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, has expressed regret that, despite carrying him for a full year in her womb, his mother did not live to see him achieve glory.
Speaking during the “Aremu Omo Asabi” play presentation at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo paid tribute to his late mother during the 66th anniversary celebration.
The former president lamented that his mother did not live to see the fruits of her labours and claimed that she fought witches and wizards when she was pregnant.
Obasanjo said: “I was told I was in her womb for 12 months, and since I was born, I have not been left for once. She had nine children but two of us survived, myself and my sister but I was the only one who went to school because my father’s belief was that no matter how educated a female child is, she would end up in the kitchen.”
During his speech, Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, praised Mama Bernice Obasanjo as a remarkable woman and stated that her impact would live on in her children’s lives, particularly Chief Obasanjo, who is still a powerful role in Nigerian history.
In the words of Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Abiodun declared that mothers will always be the cornerstone around which any society is built.
He claimed that in addition to retelling history, the musical drama served as an important reminder of the sacrifices made by moms.
“This tribute is also a call to action for all of us to honour and support mothers in every way possible. It is a reminder of our collective responsibility to create an enabling environment where every mother’s hope for their children can flourish. This is why the present administration continues to pursue policies that ensure access to quality education, healthcare and opportunities for all so that the dreams that mothers have for their children can be realised,” he said.
In a separate speech, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Chief Obasanjo for honouring his late mother after 66 years. He made the point that mothers are unique instruments in the hands of God and man and should be treated with the appropriate respect. Babajide Sanwo-Olu was represented by Mrs. Salu Hundeyin, the state government’s secretary.
