Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State, has revealed that he refrained from criticizing the late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari after his passing because his wife urged him not to.

Buhari passed away in July 2025 at a private medical facility in London and was later laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State, his hometown.

Speaking on Politics Today, a program aired on Channels Television on Friday, Fayose commented on the cultural norm in Nigeria of speaking respectfully about the deceased.

“The people in Nigeria only praise the dead. When President Buhari died, I wanted to come out and abuse him (but) my wife called me not to say so,” he said.

According to Fayose, despite the praise some may offer following Buhari’s death, the former president’s performance during his eight years in office did not meet acceptable expectations.

“Would you say Buhari performed? I’m not among those praising the dead. Don’t honour me when I die. When I die, I’m gone.”

Fayose said that Nigeria was a mess under Buhari, wondering why people now heap the blame on the administration of Bola Tinubu.

The former Ekiti governor said that, unlike Buhari, Tinubu is accessible.

“He [Tinubu] is accessible. Was the former president accessible?

“A lot of things were happening in those days but do you still find them in the system? He is not a perfect man but we are not where we were.”
