Cletus Gandu, 40, an unemployed man, said on Wednesday that he took two yam tubers out of hunger.

Gandu was accused of stealing and illegal trespassing by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, or NSCDC.

Gandu stated before the Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State that “hunger pushed me to steal yam on two occasions. I beg for leniency.”

After the defendant entered a guilty plea, Michael Bawa, the presiding judge, postponed sentencing until August 6.

Bawa commanded that he be placed under remand.

Prior to this, Alice Daniel, the complainant, brought the situation to the attention of the NSCDC Prosecutor, Mr. Marcus Audu, in court on July 15.

Audu claimed that the defendant had twice taken yams from the complainant’s Zonkwa farm.

According to him, the offence violated sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
