ICC attacks Italy over release of Libya’s war crime suspect

Matteo Piantedosi, Italy’s interior minister, explained why his nation decided to free Osama Najim, a war crime suspect from Libya.

The European nation surprisingly released the Libyan man who had been held under an international war crimes arrest order.

The minister said that his “social dangerousness” was the reason for his prompt repatriation to Libya.

Under an arrest order issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Osama, also known as Almasri, was first taken into custody on Sunday in Turin, Italy.

The ICC is accusing and seeking Osama, the head of Libya’s judicial police, of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and suspected rape and murder.

Osama in charge of the Mitiga prison, which is close to Tripoli, the nation’s capital and has been denounced by human rights organizations for the arbitrary arrest, torture, and mistreatment of migrants, refugees, and political dissidents.

Due to a procedural technicality, he was released on Tuesday and transported to Tripoli aboard a state plane.

Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, was asked to provide an explanation by the ICC after his sudden release.

“Following the non-validation of the arrest … considering that the Libyan citizen … presented a profile of social dangerousness … I adopted an expulsion order for reasons of state security,” interior minister Matteo Piantedosi said.

Antonio Tajani, the foreign minister of Italy, mocked the ICC’s protests by telling reporters that the court “is not the word of God, it’s not the font of all truth.”

“Italy is a sovereign country and we make our own decisions,” he added.

According to the ICC, Najim, a brigadier general in Libya’s judicial police, is suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity at Mitiga prison.

To stop potential migrants from fleeing the north African country and traveling to southern Italy, Meloni’s government mostly relies on Libyan security personnel.
