ICC: Israel sends out message to nations over purported plan to arrest Netanyahu

Israel has urged the countries it referred to as “nations of the civilised world” to oppose any arrest warrants for its leaders that the International Criminal Court may issue.

According to the ZINGTIE, the ICC’s head prosecutor, Karim Khan, declared on Monday that his office had requested arrest warrants for three high-ranking Hamas officials from a pre-trial hearing.

Additionally, he declared that Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defence minister, and Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, would be detained for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the October 7 Hamas onslaught and the accompanying seven-month-long conflict in Gaza.

Israeli officials, the general public, and the nation’s allies were outraged by the statement.

Tal Heinrich, an official for the Israeli government, responded to the incident on Tuesday by saying, “We call on the nations of the civilized, free world – nations who despise terrorists and anyone who supports them – to stand by Israel. You should outright condemn this step.

“Make sure the ICC understands where you stand. Oppose the prosecutor’s decision and declare that, even if warrants are issued, you do not intend to enforce them. Because this is not about our leaders. It’s about our survival.”

Although Israel has the right to self-defense against Hamas, the prosecutor made it plain that this did not “absolve Israel or any state of its obligation to comply with international humanitarian law.”
