The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has officially released the names of nine Iranian nuclear scientists who were killed in a series of targeted airstrikes carried out early Friday, as part of its broader campaign aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

According to the military, these individuals played pivotal roles in Iran’s nuclear ambitions, particularly in advancing efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon, bringing with them years of highly specialized knowledge.

“All the scientists and experts who were eliminated were significant sources of knowledge in the Iranian nuclear project, and had decades of cumulative experience in the development of nuclear weapons,” the IDF said in a statement.

The nine individuals identified by the Israeli military are:

  • Fereydoon Abbasi – nuclear engineering specialist
  • Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi – physics expert
  • Akbar Motalebi Zadeh – chemical engineering expert
  • Saeed Barji – materials engineering specialist
  • Amir Hassan Fakhahi – physicist
  • Abd al-Hamid Minoushehr – reactor physics specialist
  • Mansour Asgari – physics expert
  • Ahmad Reza Zolfaghari Daryani – nuclear engineering expert
  • Ali Bakhouei Katirimi – mechanical engineering specialist

According to the IDF, these scientists were killed in coordinated strikes across Tehran, in the same operation that claimed the lives of multiple senior military officers, including six top-ranking Iranian commanders.

The military explained that the strikes were the outcome of an extensive and long-running intelligence operation, which had intensified significantly over the past year. The focus had been on monitoring the activities and roles of critical individuals tied to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

“The elimination of the scientists was made possible following in-depth intelligence research that intensified over the past year, as part of a classified and compartmentalized IDF plan.

“Dozens of intelligence researchers worked on a secret project aimed at tracking key nuclear scientists in Iran over the course of several years.” The statement read.

The IDF also mentioned that several of the scientists targeted were seen as successors to Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the leading figure behind Iran’s nuclear initiative, who was assassinated in 2020 in an operation widely attributed to Israel.
