Reacting to a reported threat by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo against 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, the Igbo communities in Edo and Delta States have begun rallying support for Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.

In a statement issued yesterday, Chief Ekene Okpara, Coordinator-General of the “Igbo Unity Forum,” said the group’s decision was motivated by the current economic hardships and the governor’s alleged comments following Obi’s recent visit to Benin City.

Okpara expressed frustration over the deteriorating economic conditions under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, noting that Nigerians are enduring “the toughest times in recent memory.”

He revealed that the forum has kicked off a campaign aiming to deliver at least five million votes for Obi in 2027, irrespective of the political platform he chooses.

“We will not forget the governor’s alleged statement insisting that Obi must inform him before visiting Edo State. That statement alone has strengthened our resolve to mobilise across the country and the diaspora,” he said.

Describing Governor Okpebholo as a “meddlesome busybody,” Okpara advised him to concentrate on governing rather than actions that could harm his reputation.

The forum further called on the people of Edo and Delta States to unite in supporting Obi’s bid in the upcoming general elections. They also urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently tackle the country’s economic crisis and the poor state of infrastructure.
