The declaration attributed to Monday Okpebolo, the governor of Edo State, proclaiming Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, persona non grata in the state has been denounced by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary for the ADC, called the governor’s comments “disgraceful and undemocratic” in a post published on Saturday on X.

He said that since Obi is a citizen of Nigeria, he can travel anywhere in the nation, including Edo State, without the governor’s approval.

“Edo State is a Nigerian state. Obi is a free citizen and does not need the governor’s clearance to visit Nigerians in their own country,” Abdullahi said.

He also criticized Governor Okpebolo for responding in an insecure manner to Obi’s visit and donations in the state.

“When a governor panics over courtesy visits and modest donations, it is a clear sign that something is deeply wrong somewhere,” he added.

According to the spokesperson for the ADC, genuine leaders who have done a good job serving their people would not be bothered by others getting praise from the public. He proposed that the governor might be reminded of the expected leadership traits by the support extended to Obi.

Governor Okpebolo had previously cautioned Obi to avoid Edo State, according to ZINGTIE, a statement that has drawn a lot of flak on social media.
