The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Borno State has criticised the arrest of five youths in Maiduguri over T-shirts carrying the inscription, “Tinubu Must Go.”
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Baba Ahmed Mustapha, disclosed the position in a statement issued on Tuesday night.
Mustapha said the party was informed that security operatives had arrested and detained the five youths because of the T-shirts, which conveyed opposition to President Bola Tinubu.
He described the arrests as a violation of the youths’ freedom of expression and appealed for their immediate release.
According to him, wearing a T-shirt displaying a political message amounts to an expression of political opinion and should not be regarded as a criminal offence.
The ADC further urged the Borno State Commissioner of Police to ensure that security agencies carry out their duties professionally and within the provisions of the law.
The party also called on civil society organisations and other stakeholders to speak out against what it described as the deployment of security agencies to intimidate citizens over their political opinions.
