In celebration of the 90th birthday of Oba Olatunde Falabi, the Lanbeloye III and Alakire of Ikire, the elderly residents of the agrarian town benefitted from a free medical outreach on Monday. The initiative, which provided consultations and free medicines, was organised in partnership with the Geriatrics Unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and the Oyo State branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN).
This gesture honoured the monarch for his peaceful and impactful reign over Ikire. The birthday celebrations, which began on Friday, January 17, with a prayer session followed by the Jumaat service at the Central Mosque, also featured a special reception on Saturday. Prominent indigenes were recognised during the event, and it concluded with a thanksgiving service at the RCCG Province 11 Headquarters in Ikire, attended by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye. Oba Falabi is also a pastor in the RCCG.
In his sermon at the Thanksgiving Service, Pastor Adeboye said, “I congratulate Oba Falabi on his milestone and commend his peaceful leadership, which has led to significant achievements in Ikire over the past three decades.” He encouraged the congregation to “seek the fear of God and pray for continued peace in the region.”
Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Culture & Tourism, Ojo Fafa Abiodun, also praised the monarch’s leadership, noting the remarkable development in Ikire across infrastructure, economy, education, and politics. “Few towns in Osun State, if any, have such representation in both state and federal offices, including a serving senator, commissioner, and state assembly member,” he said.
Other speakers, including Senator Lere Oyewumi, now a first-class chief in Ikire, commended Oba Falabi for his encouragement of political participation among Ikire indigenes. “In the past, political positions were often hard to fill, but this has drastically changed with more educated Ikire indigenes now engaged in politics,” Senator Oyewumi said.
The three-day celebration also featured the attendance of key dignitaries, including Governor Adeleke’s representative, Senator Oyewumi; Hon. Abiola Ibrahim Inaolaji; members of the Osun State government; traditional rulers; and many Ikire indigenes, both locally and abroad.
Oba Falabi’s life story is one of dedication and service. Born on January 20, 1935, he was a renowned pharmacist, entrepreneur, and farmer before ascending the throne. He served as the CEO of Oba Falabi (Nig.) Ltd. and as the commercial manager for ROCHE (Nig.) Limited Lagos. A fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Oba Falabi’s vision is to ensure that Ikire’s indigenes can lead fulfilling lives in their homeland, with safety and peace for all.
