Under the leadership of Callistus Ihejiagwa, the Imo State Chapter of the Labour Party suspended 14 members of its State Working Committee and other members for engaging in behavior that the party characterized as egregious indiscipline and capable of defaming the party.
Speaking to reporters during its State Executive meeting in Owerri, Ihejiagwa stated that the party’s State leadership had decided to suspend a few of its State Exco members in order to maintain discipline among its members.
He claimed that the members’ attempts to instigate what he called a fake crisis in an effort to sow division among party members were the reason behind the party’s decision to suspend them.
The suspended members were also charged by the party chairman with going public to discuss internal party matters without first exhausting the party’s constitution, which he characterized as an act of insubordination and disgrace to the party’s established values.
According to Ihejiagwa, a five-member disciplinary committee chaired by Queen Osuala, the organization’s first State Deputy Chairman, has been established to investigate the accusations made against the suspended members in order to maintain a fair and open approach.
Party State Secretary Paulinus Udechukwu, Orlu Zonal Chairman Charles Uzomba, Okigwe Zonal Chairman Sunday Ike, and Owerri Zonal Chairman Innocent Nwadavid are among the members suspended.
Among them are Joseph Mbama, the State Organizing Secretary; Princess Chinedu Oleka, the State Woman Leader; Ikechukwu Osuaku, the State Financial Secretary; and Emeka Ihejirika, the State Legal Adviser.
The LP Chairman lamented the misery endured by Imo residents under Governor Hope Uzodinma’s leadership, accusing him of running the state from a distance.
He asked the governor to return to the state so he could observe and experience the extent of the people’s suffering.
Regarding the problem of certain party’s elected members defecting, he stated that the national party leadership was managing the situation, implying that legal action had been taken against them.
