In order to raise awareness at the grassroots level and register new members, the Imo State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has appointed its LGA coordinators of the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration (DMI) throughout the state’s 27 local council areas.

Callistus Ihejiagwa, the party’s state chairman, told reporters following the inauguration at the party secretariat in Owerri that the goal was to ensure the party’s presence was firmly established in every local council area in order to prepare it for the upcoming general elections.

As an instrument of the party, he said, the DMI is also tasked with fostering unity and bringing previously unaffiliated people into the fold.

According to the state party chairman, Peter Obi brought a large number of unregistered followers with him when he joined the party. Now that the election is done, the party is trying to figure out how to convert them to full members so that there won’t be any resentment.

Ihejiagwa tasked the recently appointed coordinators with fulfilling their duties and operating in accordance with the party’s constitution.

“You are the foot soldiers of the party in your respective LGAs. Don’t ever derail from the frame work already established in our constitution. Put your best to ensure the party moves forward.”

”You are not to work for individuals or aspirantes. Make the affairs of the party your overall interest,” he advised.

Speaking on the party’s leadership, Callistus Ihejiagwa insisted that Julius Abure, who was democratically chosen as the party’s National Chairman during its convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, is in charge of keeping the party together both at the state and national levels.

Ihejiagwa frowned at those calling for Abure’s removal after participating in the process that resulted in Abure being appointed the party’s national leader. He claimed that they were acting unfairly and inconsistently by demanding his termination without taking the party’s constitution into account.

Earlier in her remarks, DMI state coordinator Lady Kay Iwunze explained that the inauguration of the facility was done in response to a directive from the national leadership. She noted that the establishment of the State Executive Councils in each of the 774 LGAs inside the Federation was required since the DMI’s State Executive Councils were created statewide on December 6, 2024.

Iwunze added that in order to close the divide between the party, the Obidient movement, and other interest groups, the DMI was first called the Obidient Harmonization Committee, or OHC. However, after the party decided to change its name to the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, it was renamed.

“Our mission is to mobilize and integrate new and old members into Labour Party. Grassroots sensitization with the core values of integrity and transparency.

“To whom much is given, much is expected, we are all mirrors of DMI in our respective LGAs. The change we seek starts from us,” she said.

Together with the LGA coordinators, the DMI state coordinator vowed to serve the party’s interests and took the opportunity to express gratitude to the party’s state leadership for giving them the chance.

The event’s high point came when the state chairman of the party formally swore in the DMI coordinators in front of other party officials and supporters.
