Associations have submitted 129 applications to register as political parties, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC.
The update was given at Thursday’s regular weekly meeting of the Commission.
Seven additional applications were submitted in the last week, increasing the total to the present number, according to a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
“At its regular weekly meeting held today, Thursday 10th July 2025, the Commission received further updates on additional requests from associations seeking registration as political parties.
“Since last week, seven more applications have been received, bringing the total number so far to 129. All the requests are being processed,” INEC stated.
Additionally, the Commission declared the opening of a new online platform for political party registration.
The platform, a component of the Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System, is intended to make the registration procedure more straightforward and efficient.
Final testing of the portal should be finished in the upcoming week, according to Olumekun.
