The Katsina State Government has disclosed that nearly 80 percent of bandit-related incidents across the state are being enabled by informants and certain individuals within local communities.
This revelation was made by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, during a media briefing held in Katsina on Thursday.
According to Mu’azu, some residents not only relay information to criminal elements but also sell them essential supplies at inflated prices, thereby obstructing the progress of security agencies working to address the situation.
“In one community, a bottle of Coca-Cola was sold to bandits at N3,000, while fuel was sold at N5,000 per litre,” he said. “Some even provide drugs and illicit substances to the criminals, profiting from the insecurity.”
He went on to state that, in several instances, community members actively collaborate with the criminals to orchestrate kidnappings, even targeting their own family members.
“In one incident, a man facilitated the abduction of his diabetic father. The bandits had already stocked diabetic drugs for him. The family paid N30 million in ransom, and the son was given N8 million for his role in the abduction,” Mu’azu said.
The commissioner also pointed out that some informants have been interfering with military operations by alerting the criminals about scheduled airstrikes from the Nigerian Air Force.
“Whenever jets are deployed for aerial operations, these informants alert the bandits, who then take cover among villagers,” the commissioner said, noting that this significantly undermines the success of military strikes.
Mu’azu emphasized that while the actual bandit activities make up only about 20 percent of the broader security issue, the support provided by community members has become a major barrier to achieving peace in the region.
He appealed to citizens to support security agencies by sharing credible intelligence, assuring them that any such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
