Major General Folusho Oyinlola, who serves as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and leads Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), has urged lawmakers in Plateau State to take the lead in promoting peace within their respective areas, even as the military continues its operations through both forceful and diplomatic strategies to address insecurity.

He emphasized that ensuring security is a shared duty that demands cooperation among legislators, traditional rulers, youths, and other important players in society.

Oyinlola made this appeal when members of the Plateau State House of Assembly, led by newly appointed Speaker Naanlong Daniel, visited him at the 3 Division Army Headquarters in Rukuba, Bassa Local Government Area.

The purpose of the visit was to build a strong working relationship between the military and the legislative arm of the state, with a focus on enhancing peace and effective governance.

During the engagement, Speaker Naanlong highlighted the urgent need to address the ongoing security issues affecting the state.

He stressed that the Assembly, as a body representing the people, must take swift action in response to repeated violence across Plateau.

“We are here today to identify with you and commend your efforts in tackling security challenges in the state.

Naanlong made it clear that the aim was not to assign blame to security agencies but to strengthen joint efforts to improve safety throughout the state.

He also suggested the creation of a conflict resolution body that would handle disputes and grievances among the state’s various communities.

In his response, Major General Oyinlola applauded the legislators for their backing of the military and congratulated Hon. Naanlong on becoming Speaker.

He pledged the Army’s commitment to partnering with the legislature on efforts that promote long-lasting peace and progress in the region.

Echoing the Speaker’s remarks, the GOC pushed for the establishment of a dedicated peace committee that would allow Operation SAFE HAVEN to work hand-in-hand with the state government on conflict-related matters.

“It is essential that the state government adopts an inclusive policy to address the grievances of communities, particularly those often overlooked outside of election periods,” he remarked.

He also pointed out the many obstacles security personnel face, stressing the importance of consistent support and adequate resources to meet these challenges.

In a wider appeal, the OPSH Commander stated, “We must unite in our peacebuilding programs, which are crucial for the long-term stability of Plateau State”.

The meeting ended with a discussion session involving both military leaders and the visiting lawmakers.
