Nnamdi Kanu, who leads the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has maintained that advocating for the liberation of the South East, South South, and portions of Benue and Kogi States is a constitutional right, not an act of terrorism as labeled by the federal government.
In a statement given to officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos on October 15, 2015, Kanu argued that pursuing freedom is recognized globally as a basic human right, including in Nigeria.
The statement, which was presented in open court on Tuesday and accepted as evidence, revealed that the pro-Biafra activist said he was questioned by DSS officers without legal representation, contrary to legal provisions.
He also stated that he has not been involved in any violent activities within Nigeria and that no such incidents have been connected to him.
The DSS submitted the statement to the court, and the federal government’s attorney, Adegboyega Solomon, requested that it be publicly read during the session.
As Kanu’s defense did not object, a DSS officer currently serving as the prosecution’s witness read the statement aloud in court.
In addition to the statement, video footage from Kanu’s interrogation sessions was played publicly in court, again without any opposition from his legal team.
The trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, accepted both the statement and the videos as official evidence.
Furthermore, four suitcases retrieved from the hotel room where Kanu was detained on October 15, 2015, were also submitted and accepted as exhibits. These suitcases reportedly held personal effects, including equipment related to the Biafra radio station.
Kanu confirmed in both his statement and the videos that he launched Radio Biafra in London, where the station was officially registered.
He also acknowledged that the station was not licensed by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), stating that he saw no necessity for such registration.
