Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, has officially switched to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi declared his defection in Enugu on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

The former governor of Anambra State stated that his defection ahead of the 2027 election is aimed at improving and saving Nigeria.

“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi declared.

“We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027,” he added.

Peter Obi has warned that any attempt to rig the 2027 election will be legally and properly rejected.

Speaking in Enugu on Wednesday, Obi advocated for early verification of candidates’ academic records to avoid pre-election conflicts.

He said: “We have all watched those who benefitted from our democracy now becoming accessories of our democracy either through coercion or gangsterism to the opposition.

“We can’t allow this to happen, we will resist it. We now see people celebrating electoral fraud publicly.

“And we are saying that those planning to rig elections in Nigeria come 2027, we will resist it by every means lawful and legitimate.”
