U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has insisted that Iran must completely abandon its uranium enrichment activities and the development of long-range missiles.
Speaking on Thursday following the delay of a new round of nuclear negotiations, Rubio emphasized that Iran should also permit U.S. inspections of its nuclear sites.
“They have to walk away from sponsoring terrorists, they have to walk away from helping the Houthis (in Yemen), they have to walk away from building long-range missiles that have no purpose in exist other than having nuclear weapons, and they have to walk away from enrichment,” Rubio said in a Fox News interview.
His remarks highlight the key disagreements that continue to hinder efforts between the two nations to resolve the longstanding standoff over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Former President Donald Trump had previously warned that military action against Iran was possible if a deal could not be reached.
Despite pressure, Iranian officials have consistently refused to abandon their missile development efforts or halt the process of uranium enrichment.
Rubio suggested that, instead of enriching uranium domestically, Iran should rely on imported material for use in its nuclear energy program.
