On Monday, Iran announced its willingness to engage in indirect talks with the United States, following President Donald Trump’s call for negotiations on a new nuclear deal.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that while Iran is open to indirect negotiations, it would not consider direct talks until the U.S. changes its approach toward the Islamic Republic. He reaffirmed that Tehran would not engage in direct discussions under threats, especially as long as Trump maintains his “maximum pressure” policy.

Under this policy, Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran during his first term and reimposed harsh sanctions on Tehran. The agreement, signed between Iran and world powers, required Iran to limit its nuclear ambitions in exchange for relief from international sanctions.

Western nations, including the U.S., have long accused Iran of seeking a nuclear weapon, a claim Tehran denies, insisting its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes only.

On March 7, Trump said he had written to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urging nuclear negotiations and warning of possible military action if Tehran refused. The letter was delivered to Tehran on March 12 by UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash, according to the Iranian news agency Fars.

In response, Khamenei stated on Friday that U.S. threats would not succeed and warned of reciprocal measures if the U.S. took any hostile actions against Iran.

Araghchi said on Thursday that Trump’s letter felt more like a threat but could potentially open up opportunities. He also noted that Tehran would respond soon.

Since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the Western-backed shah, diplomatic ties between Tehran and Washington have been severed. Communication between the two nations has been facilitated through the Swiss embassy in Tehran.
