The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stated that the position of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) validates its assertion that the law is being violated in the ongoing leadership dispute within the party.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party emphasized that the NBA’s stance affirms that courts should not have jurisdiction over internal party matters.

“The NBA’s position is clear and unambiguous: courts have no jurisdiction over the internal affairs of political parties,” the statement noted.

The ADC described the NBA’s intervention as “timely and principled,” further stating that attempts to seek court orders in such cases are in direct violation of the Electoral Act.

According to the party, the leadership dispute is not a legitimate legal issue but rather “a coordinated effort to weaponize the judicial process for political ends.”

The ADC accused certain individuals of exploiting court processes through “forum shopping and malafide litigation,” aiming to create confusion within the party.

The party also argued that the situation highlights broader political pressure, alleging that the ruling party is attempting to weaken opposition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC warned that any court orders obtained in violation of the law “are fundamentally defective and cannot stand.”

While applauding the NBA for its stance, the ADC also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain its neutrality.

“INEC must remain a neutral arbiter, not a participant in political engineering,” the statement stressed.

The party warned that Nigeria’s democracy could be in jeopardy if institutions are swayed and legal processes are misused.

“The issue before us is bigger than the ADC. It is about the integrity of the democratic process itself,” the statement concluded.

The ADC assured it would continue to defend its leadership and safeguard democracy through lawful means.
