Israel attacks Rafah after Hamas claims they are responsible for the deadly rocket attack

Near the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, where Palestinian health officials reported that at least 19 people were killed by Israeli fire on Sunday, three Israeli soldiers were killed in a rocket attack that was claimed by the Hamas armed wing.

On Sunday, the armed section of Hamas took credit for an attack on the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza, which Israel claimed resulted in the deaths of three of its soldiers.

The region of the border, which was reportedly blocked to relief trucks entering the coastal enclave, was targeted by ten rockets fired from Rafah in southern Gaza, according to the Israeli military. There were still open crossings.

The armed branch of Hamas claimed to have fired rockets against an Israeli army base near the border, but it did not specify the location of the firing. According to a source close to the group, the commercial crossing was not the aim, as reported by Hamas media.

Near the Egyptian border, at Rafah, more than a million Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Palestinian medical professionals reported that shortly after the Hamas attack, an Israeli airstrike struck a house in Rafah, killing three people and injuring numerous more.

The counterattack was confirmed by the Israeli military, which said that it also hit a nearby “military structure” in addition to the launcher from which the Hamas projectiles were fired.
