At least 33 individuals, many of them children, lost their lives in Israeli air raids across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to Gaza’s civil defence authorities, as Israel ramps up its military campaign in the enclave.
The latest round of airstrikes came shortly after the Israeli army announced a broader offensive aimed at dismantling Hamas and rescuing the remaining hostages, raising international alarm over the escalating humanitarian catastrophe.
Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmud Bassal informed reporters that an early-morning airstrike on makeshift shelters housing displaced civilians in Al-Mawasi, located in southern Gaza, left 22 people dead and over 100 injured.
Footage from AFPTV showed the aftermath `scenes of destruction as survivors searched through the wreckage, while emergency personnel provided urgent care to the injured amidst chaos. Grieving families were also seen mourning at a hospital in Khan Yunis.
“The series of violent Israeli air strikes across Gaza overnight and into the morning resulted in at least 33 martyrs, more than half of whom were children,” Bassal said.
The Israeli military has yet to issue a statement regarding these latest casualties.
The intensified offensive has triggered renewed global condemnation.
During an Arab League summit held in Baghdad, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced serious concern over the situation, saying he was “alarmed” by the surge in violence and called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.
European Council President Antonio Costa also reacted, stating he was “shocked” by the ongoing developments.
Since March 2, Israel has enforced a near-total halt on humanitarian aid into Gaza, creating severe shortages of essential supplies including food, clean water, medical resources, and fuel.

Describing the worsening conditions in the north of the territory, Marwan Sultan, head of the Indonesian Hospital, called the crisis “catastrophic.”
On Sunday, Gaza’s health ministry, overseen by Hamas, accused Israeli forces of encircling a hospital and obstructing emergency medical services, leading to what it described as scenes of “panic and confusion.”
Since Israel resumed airstrikes on March 18, the ministry reports that at least 3,131 individuals have died. This brings the total number of fatalities in Gaza since the onset of the war to 53,272.
The ongoing conflict began after Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023, which left 1,218 people dead in Israel, the majority of whom were civilians.
That attack also resulted in 251 hostages being taken, with 57 still believed to be held in Gaza. Israeli authorities estimate that 34 of those remaining are no longer alive.
In Tel Aviv, protests flared on Saturday as demonstrators urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a deal to bring the hostages home.
“Instead of bringing them all home… Netanyahu is dragging us into a needless political war,” said Zahiro Shahar Mor, the nephew of Avraham Munder, a hostage who was killed.
Meanwhile, negotiations mediated by Qatar have resumed in Doha, with representatives from both Hamas and Israel participating. Although talks are ongoing, no concrete progress has been reported so far. Netanyahu has instructed the Israeli delegation to stay in Doha.
Despite these efforts, hardline members of Israel’s government, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, have voiced strong opposition to any agreement at this stage, arguing that military pressure should not be reduced.
