On Sunday, the Israeli military reported intercepting a missile launched from Yemen, with Houthi rebels claiming responsibility for the attack.

The rebels said their target was an air base in southern Israel.

“The missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted… prior to crossing into Israeli territory,” Israeli military statement said.

Meanwhile, the Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, stated that they had fired a hypersonic missile aimed at the Negev Desert’s Nevatim air base in southern Israel.

The Houthis, part of Iran’s resistance alliance against Israel and the U.S., have positioned themselves as protectors of Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The group has frequently launched missiles and drones targeting Israel, as well as vessels operating along the vital Red Sea shipping route, prompting retaliatory strikes by Israel and the U.S. on Houthi positions.

Reports suggest that these strikes have escalated since January 20, following the return of U.S. President Donald Trump to office, with nearly daily attacks over the past month.

Israel’s army radio reported that more than 20 missiles have been fired by the Houthis at Israel since they resumed hostilities after Israel resumed its offensive in Gaza on March 18, ending a two-month ceasefire.
