Joke Silva, a veteran Nollywood actress, has thoughtfully explained why she chose not to take her husband Olu Jacobs’ last name after they were married. It turns out that he made the decision.

In an interview with Stephen Akintayo for the Leadership Podcast, the 62-year-old movie star disclosed that in the early years of her career, her husband urged her to keep her maiden name as a branding tactic.

“He [Olu Jacobs] was the one who actually advised that I don’t. Because he understood the importance of branding,”she said.

“He was like, my brand has started building as Joke Silva and changing brands several years after one has been using that brand, as far as he was concerned, could cause problems for me.”

She made it apparent that everyone knew her as Mrs. Jacobs in private settings, even while she continued to be Joke Silva in public.

“So, we kept the name Joke Silva as the brand, but within the circles, there was nobody who didn’t know I was Mrs Jacobs. It really didn’t matter.”

One of Nollywood’s most admired couples, Silva and Jacobs have been wed for more than 30 years. On and off film, their tale continues to be a brilliant illustration of love, respect for one another, and collaboration based on purpose.
