Renowned Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has spoken out in defense of fellow artist Tems, raising concerns over her omission from discussions about Afrobeats’ leading stars.

The term “Big 3” is often used within the music industry to refer to Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid three male artists widely recognized as Nigeria’s most influential figures on the global music stage.

However, Tiwa is challenging the criteria behind this classification.

She pointed out that such labels often overlook the accomplishments of female artists who have made significant contributions to the genre.

During a recent conversation on BBC Radio 1Xtra, Tiwa questioned why women, particularly Tems, are not included in the same elite category as their male counterparts.

“Think about it, Certain types of artistes get paid more. So, they get the opportunity to spend more on influencers and radio play so you are going to hear their music way more.

“Also, I feel like it is unfair to have a conversation about the Top 3 and not mention someone like Tems. Are you serious?” she asked.

Tems gained widespread recognition in 2020 through her collaboration with Wizkid on the hit track Essence. Since then, she has achieved international acclaim, winning her first Grammy Award in 2023 for her role in Wait For U.

In 2025, she secured her second Grammy in the Best African Performance category, further cementing her status as a key figure in the Afrobeats movement.
