The Provost of Bayo Tijani College of Education, Lagos, Amaechi Matilda, has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to support the numerical growth of private colleges of education in Nigeria. This appeal was made during the 6th matriculation exercise of the college, held in Lagos.
Amaechi emphasized the need for JAMB to consider the location of private colleges of education when sending prospective students to them. She noted that sending students from the Eastern or Northern part of the country to colleges in the South may not yield positive results due to financial constraints.
“The current economic situation in the country makes it challenging for parents to afford the cost of training their wards in far places,” Amaechi said. “When prospective students are offered admission in the state where they reside, it becomes easier for parents to train them.”
Amaechi also appealed to private secondary school owners to employ trained teachers from colleges of education or universities. She encouraged youths to pursue education and shun evil practices that can cut their lives short.
Addressing the matriculating students, Amaechi advised them to utilize the opportunity fully and graduate with excellent results. She also emphasized the importance of being good ambassadors of the college.
The college has a zero-tolerance policy for indecent dressing and examination malpractice, Amaechi noted. Additionally, the college offers skill acquisition programs to aid students in becoming active and self-sufficient.
Some of the matriculating students praised the college for providing them with the opportunity to study and promised to adhere to the college’s rules and regulations.
