Jigawa State’s Gwaram Federal Constituency’s representative, Hon. Yusuf Shittu Galambi, has denied claims that National Assembly members were bought off to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

His remarks are made in the midst of a continuing dispute in which some organizations claim that lawmakers are being swayed in their choices.

Galambi denied the allegations in a press statement released on Saturday, stating that parliamentarians were neither pressured or given incentives to support the president’s choice.

He claimed that the majority of members backed the bill because they were dedicated to preserving democracy and defending the rights of Rivers State residents.

He emphasized that the National Assembly’s support stemmed from a desire to preserve peace, political stability, patriotism, and democratic institutions.

“I was shocked by the media reports spreading falsehoods and mischief, suggesting that we were bribed or forced into supporting the president’s decision regarding Rivers State,” he said.

He added that lawmakers supported the action as a necessary measure to maintain democracy and even to shield Governor Siminalayi Fubara from impeachment due to strong political opposition from a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Nigerians should recognize the role of the National Assembly in advising the president to establish a reconciliation team of eminent Nigerians before the six-month emergency rule expires,” he added.

In response to criticism from civil society organizations and opposition groups, Galambi said that parliamentarians put political cohesiveness, national unity, and democratic stability ahead of sentimental responses.“

Contrary to the views of opposition groups and activists, we assessed the situation with a focus on patriotism, peace, and the preservation of democratic structures—including the people, the governor, and the Rivers State Assembly,” he stated.

He urged Nigerians to back peaceful discussion as a means of addressing the problem in his closing remarks.

“I call on well-meaning Nigerians to give peace a chance and allow Mr. President to explore the best possible solutions through dialogue and unity,” he said.
