“Disappointing” is the phrase First Lady Dr. Jill Biden used to describe how she thinks about the way her husband, President Joe Biden , was treated by Democratic Party leaders during the 2024 presidential campaign.
In her reflections on the controversial election that resulted in Biden’s last year in office, Jill Biden expressed her displeasure with long-time supporters, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is thought to have left Biden’s campaign following his dismal debate performance against Donald Trump.
In what is probably going to be her last interview before she leaves the White House next week, Jill Biden told The Washington Post, “We were friends for 50 years.” “It was disappointing.”
Both Biden and Pelosi became well-known in their party at roughly the same period, with Pelosi becoming a representative from California in 1987 and Biden becoming a senator from Delaware in 1973.
Their relationship was tested last summer when Biden’s poor debate performance caused the public to lose faith in his abilities to be the Democratic nominee and president, forcing Democrats to defend him.
During an interview with MSNBC in July, Pelosi notably declined to state whether she believed Biden should continue to lead the Democratic ticket.
“It’s up to the president to decide if he’s going to run,” Pelosi said simply.
Soon after, it was widely reported that Pelosi was spearheading a covert pressure campaign to persuade Biden to resign so that a younger Democrat with a higher chance of beating Trump could take his place. Pelosi has refuted this in public.
Jill Biden was offended by Pelosi’s blatant inability to commit to Biden, her long-time friend, regardless of her involvement in forcing Biden to go.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about relationships,” Jill Biden cryptically toldThe Postin her interview. “It’s been on my mind a lot lately”.
Former Delaware Technical Community College assistant dean and Jill Biden pal Mary Doody told The Post that the First Lady was discussing “a lot” how “disrespectful” it was for Democrats to remove Biden.
“It was awful. It was mean. It was disrespectful,” Doody said. “She talked a lot about that. I know I’m biased, but Joe Biden did not deserve that.”
As she gets ready to depart the White House, Jill Biden leaves behind a record of unwavering devotion to her friends, family, and personal pursuits. She has been there for her spouse through his successes and failures. Jill Biden continued to teach at Northern Virginia Community College even though she assumed a public role as First Lady.
Even while performing her duties as First Lady, Jill Biden famously attended almost every day of her son Hunter Biden’s federal firearms trial. She flew to France for one day to accompany Biden for a D-Day celebration then flew back to Delaware the next day to support Hunter Biden.
She has become Biden’s defender because of her commitment to helping her family, even while he seems unwilling to hold a grudge.
