A woman lost her life early Saturday in Thessaloniki, a city in northern Greece, when an explosive device she had with her detonated in her hands.

Authorities reported the incident, noting that the woman had previously been involved in multiple robbery cases and was already known to law enforcement.

Officials also mentioned that they are looking into her potential connections with radical left-wing organizations.

Police stated that the 38-year-old appeared to be transporting the bomb with the intention of placing it in front of a nearby bank around 5 a.m. on Saturday.

The blast caused destruction to multiple shopfronts and vehicles in the area.

“It appears that she was carrying an explosive device and planned to plant it a bank’s ATM. Something went wrong and exploded in her hands,” the police said.
